theatre vertigo announces company openings

Theatre Vertigo, a non-profit theatre ensemble
based in SE Portland, will hold invited company membership auditions and portfolio
presentations on Sunday, March 13. Callback interviews will be held on Saturday
March 19
and Sunday March 20.

Theatre Vertigo’s mission is to engage audiences
by producing high-quality, ensemble driven theatre
with a focus on producing and developing new or rarely seen works. Next
season will be Vertigo’s 19th and our current ensemble includes Stephanie
Cordell, Nathan Crosby, Nathan Dunkin, Tom Mounsey, Shawna Nordman, Matt Pavik,
Holly Wigmore and R. David Wyllie.

The structure of the company is unique in that
we make all artistic decisions as a collective group; we do not have an
artistic nor managing director.

Here’s a peek into Vertigo membership:

Company Member’s Expectations of Theatre Vertigo

  • The right to have a voice in all company decisions, both artistic and administrative provided you take an active role in one of many leadership positions.
  • The opportunity to attend any Vertigo hosted workshops as they are scheduled.
  • Freedom to work with other theaters and pursue your craft in other venues, provided it does not detract from your ability to perform your job duties as a Theatre Vertigo company member.
  • For acting company members:
    • A guarantee to be cast, if possible, before any guest artists. Vertigo Company
Members will have a closed audition for each production before any
outside actors are invited to audition. Based on that audition, if a role can be reasonably filled by auditioning company
members, that role must be offered to said members before
      non-company actors are considered.
  • For non-acting company members:
    • A guarantee to work on the show(s) of your choice.
      • Directors: Will be interviewed for any show(s) they might be interested in before any outside directors are brought in. Director will be offered a
production, barring any artistic red flags or impediment of outside
        circumstances.
      • Designers will
have a guarantee for artistic offers, if possible, before any guest
artists.  Directors will be given a list of Vertigo designers and
encouraged to meet with interested company member candidates. If a position can be reasonably filled by interested
designer(s), it must be offered to said designer(s) before
        non-company members are considered.

Theatre Vertigo’s Expectations of Company Members

  • Respect and active support of
    fellow company members
  • Commitment to have an active
involvement in at least one Vertigo production per season.
  • Participation and/or attendance at
all first reads, Vertigo invited runs, pre-show clean up nights, opening
    night festivities, and strikes.
  • Attendance at and participation in
75% of meetings in a fiscal year.
  • Active participation in our play
    selection process.
  • Leadership in and commitment to at
least one administrative area. Examples of current need include:

    • Ticketing
    • Calendar management
    • Social media
    • Web design
    • Rental management
  • Positive representation of Theatre Vertigo in the community.
  • Open, honest and regular communication with the Vertigo company.
Members are expected to check their email at least once per day in
order to keep up to date on company business.
  • Members will be responsible
tenants of the Shoebox Theatre, causing no harm to the space nor creating
a possible liability for Theatre Vertigo.
  • Continued commitment to Theatre
Vertigo projects and company, even if involved in another production
    elsewhere.

includes exciting artistic opportunities but also an extensive commitment to
administrative and production responsibilities, those who are interested in
submitting are asked to draft a letter of interest. This letter should include
the following information:

areas such as theatre administration, marketing, graphic or web design,
public relations, grant writing, accounting, etc.

ensemble company, and Theatre Vertigo in particular

Please email PDF/JPG files of your letter of intent, headshot (actors only), and resume to the following address: [email protected]

People of all ages and backgrounds are
encouraged to submit; we are looking for a diverse group of theatre artists and
are accepting applications from actors, designers, directors, and dramaturgs.

Sunday February 28. Audition and portfolio presentation invitations will be
sent no later than March 4.

contemporary monologues no longer than 3 minutes in length. Designers, directors, and dramaturgs will be asked to prepare a presentation of their portfolio of work
