An officious, puritanical bureaucrat berates his beautiful wife for allowing her titular underpants to fall to the ground at a parade for the king. He is consumed with the fear that they will be financially and socially ruined by the inevitable scandal. Before long, men appear at his door to rent a room, and, unnoticed by the proprietor, to seduce his wife. As the scandal erupts into spectacle, the characters reflect upon our fascination with fame, our reliance on gender roles, and our enslavement by sex. Replete with off-the-wall humor, word play, and masterful banter, Martin’s adaptation of Carl Sternheim’s 1910 comedy is as relevant (and as hilarious) today as it was a century ago.
